Abstract

Dielectric metasurfaces selectively interacting with light of different circular polarizations are promising platform for advanced chiral devices and application. Taking into account metasurface symmetry, one can precisely shape maximum chiral resonances [1], providing the ultimate possible difference between “left” and “right” optical properties. By using coupled mode theory and S-matrix formalism we demonstrate general rules of achieving both intrinsic [2,3] and extrinsic [4] optical chirality. We also pay special attention to the symmetry breaking by a substrate and analyze, in terms of the resonant states expansion, how a transparent substrate can induce up-to maximum optical chirality in planar metasurfaces [5] compatible with conventional one-step nanolithography.
